A Good Way To Starve Malaria Is To Eat By Sumayyah Adenle

I wrote this around 3 years ago when I was just recovering for malaria, while writing for a blog, Akinyemi's Journal

During my illness, I discovered a lot of things I'll gladly share with you in this article. But first, I'd like to share some of the symptoms of the deadly malaria. Beware!

  • Sensation of cold ( like serious cold, when you will be shivering under 10 wrappers).
  • Headaches, fever, and vomiting ( the headaches is just as if someone is hitting you with an hammer at intervals).
  • Sweats and tiredness
  • Chills
  • Poor appetite ( like seriously, this is the worst part. I really hate to part with meals).
  • Diarrhea (rare)
  • Multiple convulsions (rare)

NOTE: BE SURE TO VISIT A DOCTOR. BY ALL MEANS AVOID SELF-MEDICATION!

Now, you cannot rely solely on medications. Diet has a huge role to play too. I know appetite could be your strongest enemy in this situation, but you don't have to feed it by going hungry. You have to eat to speed up the recovery process. For this reason, I'll share some tips with you.
  • Hydrate yourself – Drink lots of fluids like water (boiled water is preferred), juices, coconut water, and milkshakes. It helps the parasites move out from the body quickly.
  • Work on your carbs- High carbohydrate diet should be taken for energy.
  • Eat combinations – Always eat combination of fruits and vegetables with different colours. They help detox the body.
  • Have a high protein diet – This helps to protect the body and helps in the synthesis of antibodies which will fight against parasites. The requirement of protein is increased as there is a massive tissue loss. A high protein with high carbohydrates diet is helpful in protein utilization for anabolic and tissue building purposes. Intake of high biological value protein such as milk, curd, lassi, buttermilk, fish (stew), chicken (soup/stew), egg, etc. are useful to fulfill the requirement.
  • Add Omega-3 fats to your diet – It helps to reduce inflammation in the body.
  • Always take multivitamins-  Vitamin A and Vitamin C rich foods such as carrot, beetroots, papaya, citrus fruits (e.g. orange, mausambi, pine apple, grapes, berries, lemon, etc.), with vitamin B complex are very useful to boost immunity. They help to rejuvenate your body.

FOODS TO AVOID:

  • Spicy foods
  • Fried foods
  • Refined foods
  • Cake
  • Pastries
  • Pickles
